Find out how we can help you:

The earlier gum disease is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat

If you recognise any of the below symptoms of gum disease, it’s important for both your oral health and general wellbeing that you seek advice from a periodontist. If periodontal disease is identified in its early stages, it is easily treatable. If it is ignored, the disease can quickly progress and become irreversible, often needing surgical intervention.

Bleeding gums
Sore and bleeding gums can be distressing. Just as you wouldn’t ignore bleeding from another part of the body, it’s important not to ignore bleeding gums.

Swollen gums
Swollen gums often appear red instead of a healthy pink colour. Also referred to as gingival swelling, swollen gums can often feel sensitive, painful and irritated.

Bad breath (halitosis)
Halitosis, or bad breath, can be one of the early warning signs of gum disease, caused by a
build-up of plaque along the gum line. If this plaque isn’t effectively removed, the gums can
become swollen and infected, two of the symptoms of gingivitis, or the first stage of gum
disease.

Receding gums
When gum recession occurs pockets form between the teeth and gum line, making it easier for bacteria to build up.

Loose teeth & missing teeth
The loosening or movement of the teeth can often be a sign of rapidly progressing gum disease, or periodontitis. With the care from a periodontist, complete loss of a tooth can be avoided.

Tooth sensitivity
If you’re experiencing tooth sensitivity when you eat or drink hot, cold or sweet food, it could suggest you’re suffering with gum disease.

Risk factors & treatment for gum disease

Whilst more than 45% of adults in the UK are affected by some form of gum disease,
there are a variety of risk factors that may contribute to the development of
periodontal disease and/or its progression, including age, stress, smoking, genetics and
obesity. Find out about the four distinct stages in the video. Early intervention of
gum disease is crucial so that it can be treated to ensure your teeth last as long as
possible. Treatment in the early stages can often involve minimally invasive and
painless laser treatment.
